Emmendingen. The former Krauss department store is being converted into the Löwentor mixed-use project. UNMÜSSIG Bauträgergesellschaft Baden has now celebrated the topping-out ceremony. The project will create space for retail, hospitality and homes.
He would prefer to refrain from reliving the odyssey of recent years leading up to the start of construction in September 2022, said Hans-Peter Unmüßig, Managing Director of the Freiburg-based property development company UNMÜSSIG, at the topping-out ceremony. After all, his original plans had included a shopping centre and many times the number of parking spaces. Instead he praised the way the city administration had “calmed the nerves and supported the project”, as well as the “stamina” of everyone involved. The former Krauss department store on Theodor-Ludwig-Straße is set to be given a new lease of life by spring 2025, 15 years after its demise. The city has great expectations for this urban development.
The name Löwentor (Lion’s Gate) commemorates the former Zum Löwen inn. Chemist chain dm, household discounter Tedi, optician chain Fielmann, an Asian restaurant, a café and a bakery with outdoor seating will all move into the 6,700 m² complex. A 2,100 m² section of the upper floors will also be home to 38 rental homes ranging in size from 20 m² to 90 m². Tenants have access to a green inner courtyard. The building is an energy-efficient house in accordance with KfW 55 and is equipped with a heat pump and PV system. There are plans to obtain BREEAM certification in the Excellent standard.
