Westarkaden Freiburg / Städtleturm

Vom Brachland zum Landmark

The project

With the Westarkaden® Freiburg, UNMÜSSIG transformed the former Brielmann industrial site into a true urban landmark – a pioneering model for contemporary district centers that combine living, working and retail. Known locally as the “Städt(le) Tower” and distinguished by its pedestrian ‘Gässle’, the development comprises more than 300 apartments along with 7,500m² of large-scale retail and gastronomy space. As its architectural highlight, the 13-storey ‘Städtle Tower’ completes the ensemble with 14,500m² of office space, today used by the University Medical Center Freiburg.

From brownfield

Where unused land once shaped the streetscape, the Westarkaden have created a vibrant urban environment with high-quality public spaces. The ensemble of five building blocks – linked by the pedestrian “Gässle” – forms a fully functional district center featuring more than 300 high-quality rental apartments, diverse retail offerings, gastronomy and modern infrastructure. The project demonstrates how successful district development emerges when architecture, uses and public spaces are intelligently interwoven.

To landmark

The 13-storey Städtle Tower marks the architectural and urban conclusion of the Westarkaden ensemble – and makes a statement. Positioned at the intersection of Berliner Allee and Breisacher Straße, it accommodates the new administration of the University Medical Center with around 450 employees and establishes a defining anchor within the district. Flexible office layouts, contemporary working environments, conference areas and social spaces stand for a future-proof workplace – and for the fusion of function and identity in the urban realm.
